THE SILO AND US/ALLE OS OG SILOEN

by Carina Randløv

At the harbor in the small town of Stubbekøbing stands an abandoned grain silo that has divided the town in two for years. Some see it as an ugly relic of the past, while others see opportunities for the future. When a group of artists and cultural entrepreneurs propose transforming the silo into an artistic landmark instead of tearing it down, a discussion arises about different dreams for the town’s future – and different views on what art actually is and who it is for.

Now the community must decide: Should the silo be torn down — or should this small town dare to dream big?

Carina Randløv has made a warm and subtle documentary about unity, change, and the courage to see something new in the old. The film follows how creative enthusiasts – each with their own voice and from their own perspective – try to breathe life into a city where empty shops and grand visions exist side by side and where contemporary art opens up a new perspective on what growth and value really are. It is a story about art, life, the country, and the city — and about the places in the so-called periphery which are fighting for the right to redefine themselves.

JUST LOOK UP

by Emma Wall & Betsy Hershey

The young activist Michael Greenberg is the founder and leader of the climate movement Climate Defiance, and through him we gain a unique insight into contemporary climate resistance in constant motion. Inspired by Gandhi, the US civil rights movement, and ACT UP, he calls for civil disobedience against the forces that are destroying the planet, and we meet a diverse, idealistic community that improvises, fails, changes tactics, and continues, driven by an unshakeable will and enormous energy.

In other words, a magnetic center for a film about what is probably the greatest challenge of our time. Directors Emma Wall and Betsy Hershey follow Greenberg and his fellow activists in their actions, their crises, and their breakthroughs. They share a desperation over the apathetic attitude toward the climate, but that does not mean they agree on everything. With their non-violent actions, they shake society awake and create viral waves on social media.

And in Just Look Up, this is fuelled musically by Chappell Roan, Doechii, and Billie Eilish – voices that, like Greenberg himself, speak on behalf of a generation that wants change now.

The REVOLUTION AGAINST DEATH

by Joshua Oppenheimer

Few filmmakers have had as much influence on modern documentary film as Joshua Oppenheimer.

With his two masterpieces, The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence (both of which won the main prize at CPH:DOX), he changed the rules for what a documentary can be. With the post-apocalyptic sci-fi musical The End, he explored the repression and self-deception of an ultra-rich elite, and that project continues in his brand new short film.

Here, we are no longer in a bunker deep underground, but rather under the blinding Californian sun. In minimalist villas that already resemble film sets, we meet a community of aging citizens. With the help of technology, they plan to have themselves frozen after death until they can be resurrected.

A disturbing visit to an environment where the question arises: Is it still self-deception if everyone else is on board with the idea?
